Towngas honoured with Industry Cares recognition for 4th consecutive year, highlighting its commitment to sustainable social development

(26 September 2024) The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) has been honoured with two prestigious awards at the Federation of Hong Kong Industries’ Industry Cares Recognition Scheme 2024. The Company received the “Best Social Impact Award” and the “Outstanding Caring Award” in the Enterprise Group, recognising its efforts in promoting green energy development in Hong Kong and actively contributing to society.

This marks the fourth consecutive year that Towngas has been recognised by the scheme. Mr Don Cheng Hill-kwong, Head of Commercial – Hong Kong Utility and Head of Sustainable Green Energy Hub at Towngas, expressed his honour at the recognition, “As the public utility with the longest history in Hong Kong, Towngas has always been committed to social responsibility. We will continue to support those in need through innovative and diverse CSR initiatives. We aim to leverage our century-old influence to promote environmental protection, nurture talent, and create shared value, contributing to the sustainable development of our society.”

Towngas is dedicated to developing green energy solutions and actively responding to the HKSAR Government’s environmental policies. This includes providing safe and efficient hydrogen supply solutions for Hong Kong. As approximately half of the gas produced by Towngas is composed of hydrogen, customers can access hydrogen through the Company’s extensive network across Hong Kong simply by installing hydrogen extraction equipment.

Currently, Towngas has established Hong Kong’s first proof-of-concept (POC) modular hydrogen power generation system at a recreational facility in Sai Kung. In addition to constructing gas pipelines and hydrogen extraction facilities for electric vehicle charging, the system utilises the residual gas after hydrogen extraction to support a combined heat and power system, further providing electricity and hot water. Towngas is also collaborating with Citybus to install a hydrogen extraction facility at its depot on Hong Kong Island to support the operation of hydrogen-powered buses.

Towngas also invests significant resources to support various community groups. To nurture young talent, the Company launched the Towngas Green Flame Energy Scientist Programme. The Green Flame Education Group, composed of Towngas employees with professional engineering or ESG knowledge, visits schools to explain concepts related to future energy, climate change, technology and innovation, and gas safety. The programme has already reached 23 primary schools, with over 3,000 participants.

In caring for the elderly, the Towngas Volunteer Service Team has partnered with a social enterprise to organise multiple events at elderly care homes, transforming care homes into nostalgic dim sum restaurants, with volunteers acting as restaurant staff, serving soft meals to help the elderly relive the joy of yum cha. In April this year, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Towngas Volunteer Service Team, a luncheon was held for 200 elderly individuals with swallowing difficulties and their carers. Attendees enjoyed both regular and soft meals, experiencing the pleasure of dining together.
